Hutchison Auto takes 2nd place at Ford/AAA State Auto Competition

4/20/2015

On Friday, April 17th, Denali Maggard and Cole Davis flew to Anchorage to compete in the Ford/AAA State Automotive Competition.

The Ford/AAA competition mimics a real shop environment where the students receive a car that is "bugged" with various problems that must be diagnosed and repaired in only 90 minutes.

Denali and Cole finished their vehicle in about 80 minutes for 2nd place, narrowly missing first place.

Both students also won the Team High Score for the written exam taken a month prior to the competition.

Both received tools, models, clothing and $5000-$7500 scholarships to UAA, Ohio State and Universal Technical Institute. It took 1 large suitcase, 2 large duffel-bags and a large box to bring home their prizes!

The results form the Academic Decathlon state competition were amazing! We had 2 teams for the purpose of the competition, but we really have always felt like we were 1 team.

Students compete as individuals and then their scores are combined for the team score for the main competition.

Hutchison Team 1 placed 3rd overall in Division II with the following individual results:
Essay - Akashia Martinez 1st place Honors division
Tane Timling 3rd place Varsity division

Speech - Brian Forrest 2nd place Varsity division

We also won the "most improved" team award for our division and placed 2nd in the Super Quiz (a separate, timed competition where students work together in their divisions).

Hutch Robotics Headed to State

This last Saturday, our Hutchison Hawk's 3 teams competed at the regional championships. During the preliminary competitions, Hutch took the top three places. The Hutch robots performed quite well, where they took 2nd place in the finals. 2 of the 3 teams are headed to the state competition this February 20 and 21st in Anchorage. What is even more remarkable is that our robot kits arrived January 5th, giving the students roughly 18 days to design, build and program their robots. Many of the other teams had been building and practicing since early September. Good Job Guys!

The Alaska Association for Career and Technical Education (AACTE) named Hutchison High School health occupations teacher, Jeanette Johnson, the Outstanding New CTE (Career and Technical Education) Teacher of the Year.

Jeanette engages students with her thoughtful and attentive teaching style as well as with her fascinating stories from her humanitarian deployment as an Army Captain Nurse in Pakistan. In addition to her success in the classroom, Jeannette played a key role in the establishment of a functional hospital lab where students may practice hospital activities such as checking vital signs and moving patients.

Congratulations on your well deserved award, Jeanette!
